I almost complained when I noticed the new version of Google’s browser, Chrome (V6), does not display the http//: part of a web address when you visit non-secure pages (it does for secure pages). As someone who copies and pastes a lot of web addresses into various documents, blog posts and spreadsheets I thought this would be, at the very least, highly inconvenient.
I got so close to complaining about this ridiculous option that I logged into my Google account and found a thread bemoaning the same. I skipped to the bottom of the thread, and noticed a comment by someone who said that, although the http:// part of the URL doesn’t appear in the address bar of the browser, it does appear when you paste an address (copied from Chrome) into another document.
Oh!
I had my doubts, as another commenter said it didn’t work for them. But guess what, it works for me.
This is actually a really nice touch and I like it a lot. It’s a shame the only mention of it on the official announcement page was this – “…cleaned up the treatment of the URL…”
The release of Chrome Version 6 coincides with its second birthday. It is a stunningly fast browser and has been my default choice since my installation of Firefox became bloated and clunky.
Chrome today is 10 times faster than the original release.
Firefox is popular because of the amount of plugins available for it. Chrome is catching up. If this is the reason why you have not tried Chrome, check out the full list of extensions here or the most popular here.

Lol, why i don’t use chrome…. It looks ugly :D
It’s as though google was trying to make things fit in with the aero interface on windows, using a ugly “now grey” bar at the top. Firefox 4 at least looks half decent :P
Hi Peter,
Chrome blends in so well it doesn’t even look like I have got a browser open! I kinda like the new colour…
