Twitter has changed the way the world communicates (What is Twitter?), but it still lacks some basic functionality users need to effectively manage their accounts. One such function is being able to easily see which of the people you follow are following you back.
Twitter could include a little icon or change the background colour to differentiate between the people following you and the people who do not follow you when you look at your following list. But it doesn’t. There is no way to easily found out this information from within the Twitter site. Unfortunately, there is no way to easily identify Twitter spammers either.
I don’t expect everyone I follow to follow me back. That would be stupid. People like Tom Hanks or Richard Branson just aren’t going to do that. And that’s obvious when you look at their following to followers ratio. But there are plenty of Twitter users out there who follow people hoping the follow is reciprocated, and once reciprocated they remove you from their follow list to make their numbers look more impressive.
That’s not exactly cricket, but it’s the way the world works.
Enter Twitter Karma (or Tweeter Karma as it’s now called)
I have looked for a tool that allows me to see which of the people I follow do not follow me back. Yesterday Dave, from Dave’s DIY Tips (who didn’t know I was looking), gave me the heads-up on a tool that does just that and I thought it would be good to share it with you as I am sure you will also find it useful.
The tool is Twitter Karma. You enter your Twitter username and password and TK displays all the people you follow and tells you if they follow you back. Perfect. If you want to unfollow/follow anyone you can do so by clicking the unfollow/follow link.

Like all the great tools it’s simple, functional and gets the job done without any fuss.

A handy online tool for finding out who has stopped following you on Twitter is http://who.unfollowed.me. It’s free to use, but you have to create an account before it tracks who has stopped following you. Once who.unfollowed.me is aware of your Twitter name you can login anytime to see who has stopped following you since the last time you logged in.

I’d never heard of this one. I’ve been using GoTwitr for some time now to do the same thing. They have many tools and their own community for readers to help grow their Twitter followers.
Thanks for your comment Joella. And thanks for mentioning GoTwitr; I’d never heard of that one. It looks like it’s worth investigating further though.
I tend to just follow people that I like maybe from seeing their blogs or some twitter search.I must admit that I never look who is following me but I do follow people that mention my username but not all of them,Sometimes SEO or Theme Developers will mention me just to try sell their services.I only unfollow people who do not look after their twitter stream and have feeds posting 5 items or more at a time. But I found twitter karma to also be a good tool for finding people you follow that are not active on twitter anymore
