How to make a static home page for a WordPress blog

The typical format for a WordPress blog is to have the latest posts on the home page, however, some bloggers prefer to instead have a static home page with links to their latest posts in the sidebar, footer or elsewhere on the page.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a static home page – it is all down to personal choice.

Setting up a WordPress blog to have a static home page is very simple.

As always the first step is to login to your WordPress blog, then choose Settings from the navigation menu on the left.

Once the section has expaned, choose Reading.

The settings on the Reading page define how readers of your blog see your home page and other sections of your site. For instance, if you leave the settings in their default state, readers of your blog will see the last 10 posts on your home page, but this number also sets the amount of items listed in your archive pages.

For this post we want to change the blog settings so visitors see a static page. If you have already created the page you want to use, select it from the Front Page drop down menu – in this case I am going to choose the About page – and tick the A Static Page radio button.

Leave all of the other settings in their default state.

Click Save Changes and go check the homepage of your blog. It should now be the static page you have chosen from the drop down menu.

If you do this, and add a different “posts” page, how do you make sure the posts page is the link that is sent to the ping services when you add a new post to your blog?
